Approval of institutions and ratings of politicians: February 2023

In February, the approval ratings of the main public authorities remain consistently high. The approval rates of the State Duma and the government have slightly increased, as well as confidence that things are going in the right direction in the country. The ratings of leading politicians have not changed significantly over the past month.

In November, the level of approval of state institutions practically did not change, while the share of those who believe that things in the country are going in the right direction slightly decreased. The electoral ratings of the parties have not changed in comparison with September.

In October, the approval rates of state institutions increased slightly, partly catching up after the fall of last month. The ratings of confidence in Vladimir Putin and Mikhail Mishustin increased by several percent, returning to August level.

Trust in public institutions

The August measurement recorded a significant increase in confidence in all state and public institutions compared to last year. Similar sharp sentiment changes were observed in 2014. The president, the army, the state security agencies, the government and the church enjoy the greatest trust today.

In September, against the background of the announcement of partial mobilization, the level of approval of the main institutions of power decreased. Confidence has also decreased that things are going in the right direction in the country. However, the estimates remain high.

In July, the level of government approval did not change significantly. The electoral ratings of other political parties have barely changed. The level of trust in Vladimir Putin decreased in July compared to June.

Ideas about the “fifth column”

There is no clear understanding in Russian society of who Russian officials mean when they talk about the “fifth column” and “national traitors”. Nevertheless, three broad categories of answers to this question can be distinguished: the “collective West” (Western countries, their leaders, NATO, etc.), Russian elites (mostly those who have gone abroad or keep money there) and critics of the Russian government.

Presidential electoral ratings

The presidential electoral ratings have not changed. The top four remain the same: Vladimir Putin, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Gennady Zyuganov, and Alexei Navalny. According to the results of the Moscow poll, Alexei Navalny came in second place.
