Politics and economy: estimates and prospects

About half of Russians consider the political climate in Russia to be tense, 41% view the economic situation as bad. A third of respondents believe that their quality of live has deteriorated over the last year. 25% and 22% of respondents, respectively, think that things will go better for their family and for Russia as a whole, 19% and 33% expect things to go worse. Most of the respondents expect both the political life and the economy in Russia to deteriorate in the coming months.

Public opinion on the liquidation of Memorial*

A third of Russians are familiar with the activities of Memorial*. Among those who are aware of his work, more than half (58%) have a positive attitude towards the organisation. Also, among Russians, familiar with the organization, the prevailing opinion is that the liquidation of Memorial* is a political process, aimed at suppressing of independent public organisations.

Migration crisis at the Belarus-Poland border

70% of Russians are aware of the migration crisis on the border between Poland and Belarus. Almost half of the respondents believe the solution to the problem would be to return the migrants to their home countries.

Events of the month

In November, respondents the events related to the coronavirus: the introduction of QR codes, the appearance of the new Omicron strain, were the ones that stood out the most (16% of Russians). Another 15% of respondents highlighted the accident at the Listvyazhnaya mine; 5% – the migration crisis at the Belarusian-Polish border; 4% – the increase in tension between Ukraine and Russia and the deaths of famous people.

Media-Foreign Agents

Flu vaccination

A quarter of Russians (23%) got a flu shot last fall/winter. This is 8 percent more than in 2016 (15%).

People in power

More than half of Russians (56%) believe that the current people in power are concerned only with their financial and career well-being. This indicator has been growing over the past few years and reached the level of 2011 (54%). Only 16% believe that they are a good team leading the country in the right way – the lowest point since 2013.

National Unity Day

Two-thirds (64%) of Russians know that National Unity Day is celebrated on November 4. This indicator has grown significantly since 2017 (53%).

Events of the month

For 21% of Russians, coronavirus-related events stood out the most in October: the non-working days, increased incidence and vaccination. 10% recalled the events surrounding the State Duma elections, 4% – accidents: gas explosions, school shootings, car accidents.  Last month only 4% of Russians talked about the events related to coronavirus.
