Social networks, together with Internet media, consistently hold a second place as the main source of news – 42% and 39%, respectively.
Where do you most often find out about the news in the country and in the world?
At the same time, the number of daily users of social networks has increased by 1,5 times over the past few years: in 2017 35% of respondents used social networks daily or almost every day, in 2021 – 57%. The number of those who do not use social networks at all decreased in approximately the same proportion – 41% in 2017, 26% in 2021.

Vkontakte remains the most popular service (43%), YouTube holds second place, third place is shared by Instagram and Odnoklassniki (31%), TikTok is in fourth place (14%).

The number of Instagram and Youtube users continues to grow smoothly (for Instagram it was 23% in 2019, 28% in 2020, 31% in 2021).
TikTok has increased the number of visitors 7 times since 2019 (from 2% to 14%), surpassing Facebook (9% in 2021).
This survey was conducted January 29 – February 2, 2021, among a representative sample of all Russian urban and rural residents. The sample was comprised of 1616 people aged 18 or older in 137 municipalities of 50 regions of the Russian Federation. The survey was conducted as a personal interview in respondents’ homes. The answer distribution is presented as percentages of the total number of participants along with data from previous surveys.
The statistical error of these studies for a sample of 1600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:
3.4% for indicators around 50%
2.9% for indicators around 25%/75%
2.0% for indicators around 10%/90%
1.5% for indicators around 5%/95%
