This survey took place between October 18–24, 2018 and was conducted throughout all of Russia in both urban and rural settings. The survey was carried out among 1600 people over the age of 18 in 136 localities of 52 of the country’s regions. The survey was conducted as a personal interview in respondents’ homes. The answer distribution is presented as percentages of the number of participants.

The statistical error of these studies for a selection of 1600 people (with a probability of 0.95) does not exceed:

3.4% for indicators around 50%
2.9% for indicators around 25%/75%
2.0% for indicators around 10%/90%
1.5% for indicators around 5%/95%

• More than a third of Russian residents were forced to forego a summer vacation this year (38%): of these, 20% of respondents said they “did not have a vacation this summer,” while 18% of respondents did not travel this summer because of financial reasons.
• The most popular “destination” for summer vacation was a dacha (summer house) or garden in the country; nearly one in every five Russians spent their vacation there (24%). Moscow residents (38%), respondents aged 55 and older (30%), and people with families (26%) spent their vacation at their dachas more often than other respondents.
• While in the country as a whole 18% of Russians spent their vacation dealing with household affairs, this proportion was higher among residents of provinces and small cities, with nearly one in every five people staying home. Another 5% of respondents within the total sample used their vacation to earn money (among young Russians aged 18 to 24, this proportion was one in every eight).
• Among those respondents who had the financial means to go somewhere this summer, a large number spent their vacation time on domestic tourism: 8% of Russian residents went to the Black Sea coast in the Caucasus or to Crimea; 11% went to visit relatives, friends, or to some other part of the country to relax.
• Only Moscow residents (18%) and respondents with a high income (11%) went abroad in large numbers; they spent their vacation time on domestic or international tourism more often than others. Within the total sample, only 5% of the population went abroad.
